Backup strategy

This article from the Boston Computing Network clearly illustrates the downsides of conventional backup strategies used today in most companies. The quote we’ve picked is typical of what our professional services find at customers.

34% of companies fail to test their tape backups, and of those that do, 77% have found tape back-up failures

Applications produce ever bigger files and the trend is not about to fade. Usage of virtualized environments increases the volume even more. Magnetic tape usage is often the only storage solution considered by companies but is not practical for quick data access especially if read errors occur on tape restore. Cloud storage technology is ideal to store large volumes of small files, large files, images, videos and even complete virtualized servers. Coupled with geo-replication, it could eliminate the need for storing backup medias outside the business or risking data corruptions on restore.
